Whale Watching in the San Juan Islands
The San Juan Islands is one of my favorite places to visit. Traveling by seaplane will get you between the islands quicker than the ferry, but I still enjoy riding the ferry at least once or twice. The Kenmore Air Seaplanes have service between Seattle and the islands, and many other destinations.
I decided to stay on Orcas Island and take both the ferry and the seaplane back & forth between Orcas Island and Friday Harbor where I was scheduled to get in three days of whale watching. I can stay out on the boat all day and I'm always disappointed when it's time to head back to the harbor.
It was a little too early in the season to spot the resident Orca pods, but way up past the Haro Straights in Canadian waters, we found a rarely seen humpback whale. No grand show, but a few hellos. Fun to observe & time it’s surfacing behaviors. These humpbacks are about as big as a school bus. An adult humpback whale can weigh as much as 66,000 pounds.
